Alissa Fulford, LCSW, Advanced Grief Recovery Specialist

Like so many others, my personal experience with grief and loss led me to the Grief Recovery Institute. In my early twenties, I experienced the loss of two close friends and had no idea how to cope with my sadness and heartbreak. Rather than addressing these complicated feelings, I pretended I was fine and kept moving forward. Several years later, I experienced the deaths of my cousin and best friend, Hilary, her daughter Ruby, and my grandfather Sam in the same year. To say I was heartbroken would be an understatement. I was still carrying the pain of the losses I had previously experienced, and now I was faced with more pain. I was lost, unmotivated, and didn’t know how to move forward. I felt numb to the world and avoided others by isolating. I was angry, and projected my anger on to others.  Despite having a strong knowledge of resources available through my job as a social worker, I had difficulty finding the right kind of support. It was not until I found the Grief Recovery Method ® that I learned to deal with the complicated feelings of unresolved grief. Through this program, I learned what grief was, how it was impacting me, and what tools I need to address my conflicting feelings and move to a place of recovery. After a period of suffering, I finally felt complete. This experience truly changed my life and I felt compelled to share this gift with others.
